About Pixelate Image

Create a pixelated mosaic effect by reducing image detail into larger color blocks. Useful for anonymizing faces or license plates in screenshots, or creating retro pixel art style effects. All processing happens in your browser.

How It Works

This tool downscales the image to a very small size (determined by the block size), then scales it back to the original dimensions using nearest-neighbor interpolation. This replaces fine details with uniform color blocks, creating the classic pixelated look.

Step by Step

  1. 1 Upload a JPEG, PNG, or WebP image
  2. 2 Adjust the block size — larger values create bigger pixels
  3. 3 Click Pixelate to apply the effect
  4. 4 Download the pixelated image

Tips

  • Block size 5-10 gives subtle pixelation; 30-50 creates a strong mosaic effect.
  • Use high block sizes (50+) to fully anonymize faces or text in screenshots.
  • For retro pixel art, try block sizes between 8 and 16.
  • Pixelated images often compress very well in JPEG format.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use this to blur faces for privacy?
Yes. Pixelation is commonly used to obscure faces, license plates, and other sensitive information. Use a block size of 20 or higher to make details unrecognizable.
What block size should I use?
It depends on the effect you want. Small values (5-10) create a subtle mosaic, while large values (30-100) produce a strong pixelation. Experiment with the slider to find the right look.
Is pixelation reversible?
No. Pixelation permanently reduces detail. Once applied and downloaded, the original detail cannot be recovered from the pixelated image.
