MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14)

MP4 is the dominant video container format on the internet, used by YouTube, streaming services, and virtually every device with a screen. It combines H.264 or H.265 video with AAC audio, supports subtitles, chapters, and metadata in a flexible MPEG-4 Part 14 container.

Technical Details

MP4 uses the ISO Base Media File Format (ISOBMFF) with 'atoms' (boxes) organized hierarchically. The moov atom contains metadata and track info, while mdat holds the actual compressed media data.

History

MP4 was standardized as ISO/IEC 14496-14 in 2003, building on Apple's QuickTime container. It became the de facto web video standard with the rise of H.264 and HTML5 video.
